Chinese Li Na Asia’s first French Open champ

This past month has been a whirlwind for professional tennis player Li Na. Since early in year she has been offered endorsement deals with Rolex, Haagen-Dazs, and Mercedes Benz, traveled across countless countries as a cultural ambassador, even the price of a domain name lina.cn was recently valued in the tens of thousands. This would be of no surprise for any tennis fan: in winning the Women's singles championship in the French Open in early June, Li Na not only became China's first women ever to win a major tournament, but also first Asian player to win a Grand Slam in the singles category.

Yao Ming attempts to conquer his Great Injury-Wall

China’s greatest basketball player, Yao Ming, is making monumental strides again in professional basketball. The 7-foot 6-inch player is attempting to return to basketball form after suffering a career-threatening foot injury two seasons ago, which prevented him from playing a single game all of last season.

China shines on the ice at Vancouver

At press time, the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada were half over. The United States was top in the medal count with 23 medals.  Canada with 8 medals was fifth behind Germany, Norway and Korea.  Half of Canada’s medals were gold-attesting to the success of its campaign to “Own the Podium”-marking the first time Canada has won gold at a home Olympics.  China was tenth in the medal count with 5 medals.  Three of China’s medals were gold, and all 5 were earned in skating events.

Amy Xu competed in the Ironman World Triathlon Championship Triathlon in Kailua-Kona,Hawaii in October.  She described her experience in a Q&A session. 

Did you do anything different to prepare for the completion of the race?

Knowing the race course is one of the toughest courses in the Ironman world, I put in more mental preparation time to visualize each part of the tri race -- to feel the swell in the ocean, the gust on the bike, and the baking heat from the lava field on the run.

The Houston Rockets are grinding out another season without their star Chinese center yet again. After appearing in five games this season, Yao Ming is out indefinitely with another severe injury that will keep out of the remaining season and possibly more.

First full-blooded Chinese athlete joins the NFL

China can finally boast about a Chinese athlete playing professional American football.  Since the NFL’s inception in 1920, never has a full-blooded Chinese football player been drafted in the league’s annual draft of college players. Ed Wang, drafted in the fifth round at 140th pick overall, was selected by the Buffalo Bills to play offensive tackle.

Wolves December Schedule

Wolves play Nets

The Minnesota Timberwolves will play at New Jerseyagainst Yi Jianlian and the Nets on Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on TV on FSN Northand on the radio on KFAN-AM 1130.

Journalist Jay Weiner spoke at the October UCBC meeting about covering the Beijing Olympics.  This is the transcript of his presentation.

Whenever I go to and then return from an Olympics, people always ask: "How was Greece?" or "How was Japan?" or "How was Australia Generally,I say, "Oh, I didn't go to Japan. I went to the Olympics."

The event creates a sort of nationless cocoon.
